Taipei guidebook offers fresh take on ROC capital

July 21, 2011

A new travel guide produced by the Taipei City Government aims to give readers a glimpse into the happenings of Taipei regardless of the time of day.

“‘Taipei Day and Night!’ offers readers a fresh take on one of Asia’s most vibrant cities,” said Hsieh Hsiao-yun, director-general of the city’s Cultural Affairs Bureau, July 19.

According to Hsieh, the book is based on the experiences of seven people who are experts at navigating Taipei. “It also includes maps in English and Chinese to help travelers find the various sites or places,” she said.

Each chapter focuses on one of six different periods in a day. The first starts at daybreak with the final one lasting well into the night. Readers can learn about hot springs, top breakfast spots, morning and night markets, old streets and nightclubs.

Long-term Taiwan resident Jeff Miller, who wrote the book’s English version, said he has been fascinated by foreign cultures since he was young.

“I prefer not to look at different cultures critically,” he said, adding that he views Taipei as a city with a vibrant ecosystem, history and culture.

Carl, a Canadian visiting Taiwan with his family, said the book makes it easy for visitors trying to plan their itineraries.
